Audi Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
Are Audi's expensive to maintain?
Audi is consistently ranked near the top of the most expensive vehicle brands to maintain. However, the auto maintenance an Audi requires is different for every vehicle and owner. Some vehicles will require more maintenance depending on the model, their age, how they are cared for, and their driving history.
Common Audi Service
General Diagnostic Investigation
Problem: The most common indication of a problem is the Audi Check Engine Light.
Repair: Our Audi technicians will start with an initial diagnostic investigation. We then contact you to discuss the next step, which will either be a repair estimate or, for more complex issues, an estimate for additional diagnosis time. Our highly trained Audi technicians use advanced diagnostic equipment to minimize diagnosis costs. <Appointment> <Estimate>
Audi Engine Oil Change
Problem: Not changing engine oil frequently enough. The Audi recommended oil change interval is too long. Even under perfect conditions, the life of an Audi engine will be dramatically shortened if the factory oil change interval is used under our local weather conditions and driving conditions.
Repair: Under Long Island NY area conditions engine oil and oil filters should be changed every 7,000 miles or six months as a minimum when using the correct synthetic engine oil. <Appointment> <Estimate>
Magnuson-Moss Act of 1975 - Federal Law Prohibits any Audi dealership from implying or denying routine warranty service because scheduled routine maintenance was performed at an independent facility. Title 15 Chapter 50 sections 2301-2312 US Federal Code
Having Joe's Garage Inc. work on your Audi does not limit or restrict your new car warranty. All that is important is that you service your Audi. By law, having your Audi vehicle serviced by the Audi dealer is NOT required.
Audi Timing Belt Replacement
Problem: The Audi timing belt is one of the hardest-working parts in your Audi engine. It is made from a synthetic rubber material that deteriorates with time. Audi timing belts should be checked and replaced every five years or at the mileage specified in your Audi service schedule, whichever comes first.
Repair: Audi timing belt replacement is a complex job that requires experienced, highly skilled Audi-trained technicians. <Appointment> <Estimate>
Audi S-Tronic Transmission Service
Problem: Your Audi's transmission fluid acts as both a lubricant and coolant for your transmission. Wear and tear breaks down the transmission fluid viscosity, making it less effective and potentially damaging transmission components. Transmission fluid should be changed according to your vehicle service schedule to ensure smooth gear changes.
Repair: Audi S-Tronic Transmission Oil Change. The Audi S-Tronic transmission is designed to give you outstanding performance. To ensure the continuous smooth operation of your Audi transmission, it is strongly recommended that the S-Tronic transmission fluid is changed every 38,000 miles. <Appointment> <Estimate>
Audi Brake Fluid Change
Problem: Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Brake fluid moisture contamination reduces the temperature at which the brake fluid boils. Lower brake fluid boiling temperature will result in increased stopping distance, reduced braking efficiency, and even brake component failure due to internal corrosion.
Repair: Standard brake fluid should be checked and replaced every 2 years. Some vehicles use silicone-based brake fluid and have a longer service life. Consult your service manual, or phone us and we will check the manufacturer's service recommendations.
Audi Coolant Change
Problem: Engine coolant is not being replaced periodically. Engine coolant contains many chemicals that increase the boiling temperature, prevent freezing, decrease corrosion inside the engine, protect hoses, cooling system, and heating system components, and lubricate the water pump seal and bearings. Over time, these chemicals lose their effectiveness and need to be replaced.
Repair: Audi Engine Coolant should usually be replaced every 2 years. Consult your Audi service manual, or phone us and we will check the manufacturer's service recommendations. Drain, flush, and replace engine coolant. <Appointment> <Estimate>

Repair: use premium-grade, high-octane gasoline. Audi spark plug replacement. Price Estimate
Audi No Start after Refueling, Popping Noise from Trunk
Problem: Popping sounds from the rear of the vehicle may be heard moments after starting the engine, or when slowing to a stop. This noise is from the EVAP leak detection pump filling the fuel tank with air, and releasing it to test the EVAP system.
The cause of the problem is the N80 valve, or EVAP system purge valve, mounted on the front of the intake manifold. The N80 EVAP valve is designed to open under specific conditions, but a worn purge valve can remain open at all times preventing the pressurization of the fuel tank.
The sequence of faults and symptoms experienced:
- Loud pop sounds from rear of vehicle
- Pop sounds end and fuel economy decreases
- Check engine light on
- OBD trouble codes stored
- Engine will not start after refueling (crank for over 30 seconds before starting)
- Vibration when vehicle slowing to a stop
Repair: Check Audi OBD trouble codes; N80 valve replacement. Price Estimate
Audi Engine Problems
Audi Engine Sludge
Problem: Audi engine sludge accumulates from using the wrong engine oil or oil filter or not changing engine oil often enough.
Repair: To avoid Audi engine sludge accumulation, we recommend more frequent oil changes using the correct synthetic oil with a high-quality oil filter. <Appointment> <Estimate>
Audi V8 Crankcase Ventilation Hose Oil leaks
Problem: Oil leaks in crankcase ventilation hoses between the cylinder banks.
Audi V8 engines leak engine oil from the crankcase breather hoses that connect to the right and left cylinder heads.
NOTE: If the crankcase ventilation passages are plugged with sludge the engine will become pressurized and force the oil out of hoses and gaskets. If this is the case the engine ventilation passages will need to be inspected and cleaned.
Repair: Audi V8 Quattro crankcase ventilation hose replacement. Price Estimate
Audi Carbon Buildup on Engine Intake Valves, Intake Manifold, Intake Runner Flaps
Problem: Audi direct fuel injection engines have a carbon buildup problem in the intake system which can cause a rough idle, power loss, and check engine light OBD codes. This is a common problem with all direct injection engines manufactured by all vehicle makers.
Audi carbon cleaning may need to be done in as few as 20,000 miles, depending on the driving you do and how frequently the engine is serviced.
In standard Audi fuel injection engines, the engine intake is cleaned by the unburnt gasoline flowing through the fuel injectors and the intake system on its way into the engine. With Audi direct-injection engines the gasoline is injected directly into the engine cylinder, and does not flow through the intake system allowing carbon to build up until it chokes the engine.
Repair: abrasive-blast cleaning of the intake manifold, cylinder head intake ports, and the intake valves. On some Audi models the intake manifold will need to be removed. Price Estimate
Audi Oil Leak From Camshaft Chain Tensioner and Valve Cover Gaskets
Problem: Engine oil leaks are common from the valve cover gaskets and camshaft chain tensioner gasket. Many Audi model years and engines are affected.
Repair: Audi valve cover gasket replacement; Audi camshaft chain tensioner gasket replacement. Price Estimate
Audi Turbo Charger Pressure Diverter Valve Diaphragm Failure
Problem: Audi turbocharged engine power loss if the turbocharger system has a boost air leak. The most common turbo boost leak is a torn diverter valve rubber diaphragm. Common symptoms are increased turbo noise when letting off of the gas pedal, power loss, and Check Engine Light on.
Repair: test for turbo-charge system leak diagnosis; turbocharger manifold seal replacement; turbocharger diverter valve rubber diaphragm replacement; and/or turbocharger diverter valve replacement. Price Estimate
Audi Water Pump and Timing Belt Inspection
