Oil Quality
When you drive a 1998 and newer vehicle choosing the correct motor oil matters greatly. Almost all new vehicle manufacturers strongly recommend that you use synthetic-based oil complying with their motor oil quality specifications. To maintain your vehicle's factory warranty, and ensure its reliability, your motor oil must also be of an exact grade and viscosity specified by your vehicle's manufacturer.
If oil change intervals are exceeded, harmful sludge and deposits from old oil could lead to expensive engine repairs and shortened engine life.
The oil change interval recommended by many manufacturers is for when your vehicle is driven under ideal conditions. Very few operate under these "perfect" conditions. While manufacturers may specify extended oil changes, waiting this long will significantly shorten the life of the engine. Many manufacturers have had to recall and repair many of these vehicles and lowered the recommended oil change interval.
Most experts agree that changing your oil at 7,000 miles will greatly extend the life of your vehicle. Especially if your vehicle's engine is turbocharged, has high mileage, or is a diesel. Oil service every 7,000 miles, using correct long-life synthetic oil, will provide lower cost-per-mile driven.
A new vehicle manufacturer warranty requires the motor oil to be changed according to the mileage and time intervals specified in your vehicle's maintenance guide. These guidelines are a minimum.
There is no warranty concern if you change your oil more frequently.
Other circumstances where the vehicle's motor oil should be changed more frequently include:
- Driving mostly short distances.
- Operating your vehicle in dusty areas.
- Driving in predominantly stop-and-go traffic.
- Operating at high speeds or high-performance driving.
- Driving in temperatures below freezing for extended periods.

Common Oil Change Problems
Problems related to changing engine oil and oil filters.
One of the greatest benefits of having a full-service auto repair shop perform your oil change service is having a fully trained, licensed auto repair technician do an inspection and report any vehicle problems.
With the extended service intervals of modern vehicles having your vehicle inspected by an auto repair technician at each oil change can prevent small issues from developing into major, expensive vehicle problems.
Many vehicle problems are not obvious and having a technician inspect the underside of your vehicle can prevent break-down and safety issues. Joe's Garage Inc. does a free inspection with each oil change service and gives you a printed report. Any problem we notice is graded as:
- Watch: may develop into a problem. Inspect again in "X" days, weeks, and months.
- Soon: needs to be fixed in "X" days, weeks, months.
- Now: A safety issue that needs immediate repair.
Oil leak from Damaged oil drain plug
Problem: A damaged oil drain plug is the most common oil change problem. Damage previously caused by inexperienced or poorly trained oil change technicians. The plug is either cross-threaded or over-tightened. Often the engine oil pan drain threads will also be damaged.
Repair: oil drain plug replacement. Engine oil pan replacement.
Oil Leak Inspection
Problem: Reporting oil leaks during an oil change is part of a quality oil change. Oil leaks can lead to low oil levels and engine damage, and also the mess oil leaks create. If the oil change technician is not experienced with your vehicle make or model they may not know of common oil leak problems that can lead to serious problems.
Solution: The most common oil leak problem is the one-time use engine oil drain plug gaskets that must be replaced at each oil change. Auto repair shops that do quality oil changes will install a new oil drain gasket at every oil change.
Another common oil leak problem is an oil leak from the oil filter adapter gasket. This a relatively simple fix by replacing a gasket or the housing assembly.
A more serious oil leak problem is when an inexperienced oil change technician does not check the oil filter gasket for leaks AFTER the oil change. There is a risk of the gasket blowing out and the engine losing all of its oil and causing major engine damage.
Coolant Leak Inspection
Problem: A very important part of an oil change service is noticing and reporting any coolant leaks. Often coolant leaks slowly develop and is best to fix them before they cause a more serious problem.
Solution: An experienced auto repair technician will notice and report coolant leaks while under your vehicle. That skill level and experience are usually not available at quick lube oil change shops.
Incorrect Oil Filter
Problem: It is very important to use the correct oil filter. Vehicle manufacturers can use engines of the same size or displacement, but are built by different suppliers depending on the vehicle model. Using an incorrect filter can result in severe engine damage as a result of oil loss from a leaking oil filter. Poor oil filter quality can also be a concern.
Solution: Using an oil change shop like Joe's Garage that employs fully qualified automotive technicians can prevent costly problems!
Engine Oil Pan Gasket May Leak
Problem: The engine oil pan gasket can develop a leak. This is another oil leak problem that a qualified auto repair technician will notice and report. Leaking oil may drip onto the exhaust system resulting in a burning smell or possible fire.
Repair: oil pan gasket replacement.
