The Story of Joe’s Garage Inc
Joe Frizell, owner of Joe's Garage Inc Southampton NY, was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to Darien, Connecticut at age 10. His hands kept moving in many things, from teaching himself how to play the drums to moonlighting at machine shops. He worked his way through high school at local gas stations and on to the local Mazda dealership, where he worked on the distinctive rotary-engined RX2s and RX3s and raced them as often as possible. He continued on a dealership tenure-track with positions the local Ford dealership and a BMW/Alfa facility.
A single weekend visit to Montauk NY changed his dealership career plans. “I just fell in love with the place, and I quit the BMW/Alfa shop the next week”. He pulled out the front seat from his VW Beetle to make room, and, in 2 trips, moved to Montauk with his dog, Bear.
The seasonal economy of the East End was a dramatic shift for Joe. Turning wrenches at the small auto shops on the Point wasn’t enough to feed Bear and himself, and he juggled digging new home foundations with Keith Grimes alongside assembling the industrial flake-ice machine and conveyors that loaded the fishing boats at Gosman’s Dock.
After two summers at Gosman’s, John Gosman told him, “I can’t hire you back, but you work really hard, and you ought to own your own business”. Joe's vision for what would eventually become Joe’s Garage crystallized as he worked his way west, from auto shop to auto shop, finally landing in 1983 at Laddie’s Service Station, a thread-bare warren of attached shacks and auto repair bays on North Sea Road & Mary’s Lane. He settled down and started a family in Sag Harbor, and continued building the ecosystem known as Joe’s Garage Inc.
“I still had some of my first customers driving all the way from Amagansett to that dump so I could maintain their cars. And one of the sheds still had a dirt floor”. In less than a year he’d bought out the owner and the metamorphosis began.
Joe’s work ethic and approach to auto maintenance steadily built a thriving service focused auto repair business on that tiny lot. But he knew improvements were needed. “I owed it to my customers and my employees to create the functional, first-class working space that they deserved”. In his mind’s eye, the facility needed to be user-friendly, versatile, and efficient to accommodate the broad expanse of cars and trucks that his customers entrusted to his care. Joe also wanted his technicians to have the right tools at the ready so that the jobs could get done right, and done right away.
Along the planning arc, Joe recognized that he had the opportunity to make an environmental difference, and he installed a recycled motor oil fired furnace to heat the building. Coupled with radiant floor heating and modern insulation, the structure is energy-efficient and comfortable.
Today the six-bay work area can accommodate anything from a beach buggy to an 18,000 lb. work truck. A computerized wheel alignment rack, new tire installation and spin wheel balancing machines allow for quick tire service. The newest technology in fluid exchanges help keep the labor time down on critical preventive maintenance operations while protecting the environment. Joe’s Garage Inc uses up-to-date diagnostic tools that can handle the latest hybrid and high tech vehicles.
Our goal here at Joe's Garage Inc is to be the best independent auto repair shop on Long Island NY.
